Throwback to the 80ıs

Imagine your alarm sounds 20 years ago, things might have been a bit different.

You take your morning shower, blow dry your hair and pull out your crimper. You carefully crimp your clorox bleached blonde hair, top it off with a thick coating of hairspray, and tease the life out of it. You pull on your pink stirrup leggings, purple legwarmers, and slip your feet into your old, beat-up Reebok high-tops, thinking to yourself, ³Man, I wish I would have bought those radical yellow Chuck Taylor high-tops.²

Then, you pull on your Frankie Says Relax t-shirt, and tie it off with a t-shirt clip. You slap on your slap bracelet, along with your friendship bracelets promised to Amber, Tiffany and Heather. Snapping on your swatch, and finally, coating your eyelids and lips with bright blue and pink, youıre ready to go.

How could one forget the outrageous fads of the 1980ıs? The hairstyles, the fashions, and the unforgettable shows. Letıs take a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

First of all, the hairstyles. Side ponytails, the Flock of Seagulls hair (resurrected in the mid-90s by Friendsı very own Chandler Bing), Jeri curls worn by such stars as Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie, and of course, the infamous mullet. Also, how easy it was back in the 80ıs to throw your hair back and secure it with a banana clip. Everywhere you went, you were bound to run head on with one of these crazy dos.

³We used to roll our jeans, I thought that was so cool. I had huge hair in the 80ıs. It was always permed. It was big.² Said Miss Susie Sisson, a graduate of 1989.

What about the famous fashion trends? Spandex, parachute pants, acid wash denim, Jordache jean jackets, and those lovely hyper color, fluorescent t-shirts. Tom Cruise made Aviators the new Œthingı thanks to Top Gun. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas made the ŒMiami Vice lookı (white blazer and pants, plain, brightly colored t-shirt, and shoes with no socks) the latest in fashion. Thank goodness weıre not stuck in the 80ıs any longer.

Of course, how could we forget all the television shows? The shows we keep close to our hearts. Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Brite, The Pound PuppiesŠringing any bells?

³They were so cheesy, but so fun,² said senior Maureen Conrad.

Growing Painsı Mike Seaver, or Saved By the Bellıs Zack Morris was every girlıs first ³love², and we all were devastated when we found out they had girlfriends.

³Growing Pains was by far my favorite show. Mike was always hilarious, and Carol was just annoying,² said junior Megan Koory.

Alf was everyoneıs favorite alien, and Bo and Luke Duke of Dukes of Hazard were the infamous, lovable outlaws of their time. Anyone could find at least one show of the 80ıs they can relate to and can receive memories from, right?

The 1980ıs had its ups and downs in every aspect, but they were great while they lasted. The fads of the 80ıs will forever be burned into Marian girlsı brains, whether it be good or bad, and will provide lasting memories forever.
